Notes From the Track Superintendent

Track progress continues toward the goal of finishing Phase Two.  Track laying has progressed well into the final loop which will include the location of “Helper”.  A division point switch has also been installed which will be the beginning of Phase Three.  Phase Three will allow track to progress East along the valley floor with several passing tracks and branch lines.  A proposed 4% climb up the North cliff face is in the planning stages.  While this is not a planned “main line”, this will give engineers a challenging grade.  As work crews continue to be excited about the progress, and the weather holds, completion should be within several months of Phase Two.

To stand on the hillside over-looking the work, you get a real sense of the scope of this project.  Those who have been involved in this project should be congratulated for their outstanding achievement.  Let’s keep the excitement going as we continue toward the “prize”.

Phase Two progress now has track laid from the West end of “Dry Creek Bridge” (formerly known as the Big Bridge), down grade to our destination--the lower plateau.  At this point, the final step of laying the loop will take place. This loop includes not only the location of “Helper”, but will also have the leg of Phase Three installed. Phase Three will continue track along this lower plateau.  This loop will bring to a close a long and difficult section of this railroad, but should present a level of challenge and excitement of operation for the “Bijou Creek and Western”.
